How to distinguish the black mulberry?
There exist tree types of genus mulberry (Morus) in Slovakia
of which the
tree (Morus nigra) is the richest in number. This type grows
mainly in upland vineyard areas. The tree (Morus alba) can be found in southern parts
of Slovakia. The
tree (Morus rubra) is very rare and is grown only in parks and
gardens. Although these three types seem to be almost identical
on the first sight, deeper examination reveals various differences.

Origin of the
tree is in the Middle East, i.e. in such countries as Syria,
Jordan, Afghanistan, Turkey, Iran etc. As a rule, its trunk
develops unusual shape - it cracks into several parts and goes
closer to the ground. In average, the tree is 4 to 6 meters
high with a top of about 10 to 12 meters wide. Ripe fruit of
the black mulberry tree has sourrish taste. It is bigger than
other mulberry fruit - from 20 to 60 mm long - with relatively
short stems. Leaves of black mulberry tree are tough, leathery
with soft lanugo on their reverses.
The tree comes
from China. Since long ago it has been grown there for silk
moth (Bombix mori). It does not undergo any trunk deformation
and thus it keeps the same compact shape till the end. Ripe
fruit is smaller (max. 25 mm long) and has flat sweet favour.
Its colour differs from white, to dark red or nearly black,
what can be a bit misleading. Unlike black mulberry, it has
longer stems and soft, thin and smooth leaves.
The tree originates
in North America. In Slovakia it is purely ornamental tree grown
in parks and gardens. Ripe fruit is dark red, of sourrish taste
very similar to black mulberries. Its stems are long and leaves
are feltable on reverses.
